The Atlanta Falcons announced that they have signed veteran free agent center Jeremy Newberry.
Terms of the contract were not disclosed.
Newberry, 33, is entering his 12th season in the NFL after being drafted in the second round (58th overall) of the 1998 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers.
In nine seasons with the 49ers, Newberry started 90 games, earned Pro Bowl honors in 2001 and 2002, and was named to the All-Pro second-team in 2002. Microfracture surgery on his left knee in August of 2006 ended both his season and career with the 49ers.
Newberry, a native of Antioch, California and University of California alum, would stay in the Bay Area, signing with the Oakland Raiders and starting games in Silver & Black in 2007. Last season, Newberry was active for all 16 games for the San Diego Chargers, starting three games in September for the injured Nick Hardwick.
The addition of Newberry puts the Falcons at 79 players under contract, with 6 unsigned draft choices. The maximum number of signed players a team may have on its roster is 80.
