The Atlanta Falcons have announced the signing of sixth-round linebacker Spencer Adkins.
Adkins was chosen with the 176th overall pick of the 2009 NFL Draft after not being invited to the annual Scouting Combine in February.
During his career at the University of Miami, Adkins appeared in 31 games, making 72 tackles (10 for loss), 5 quarterback sacks, and 1 interception. At 5-11 and 246 pounds, Adkins is undersized but opened some eyes with a sub-4.5 time in the 40 during his Pro Day at the "U". His speed could make him a valuable member of an already stellar Falcons' special teams unit.
Terms of Adkins' deal were not disclosed.
Adkins becomes the fifth Falcons' draft pick to sign, joining third round cornerback Christopher Owens, fifth round cornerback William Middleton, fifth round offensive tackle Garrett Reynolds, and seventh round defensive tackle Vance Walker. Still unsigned are first round defensive tackle Peria Jerry, second round safety William Moore, and fourth round defensive end Lawrence Sidbury.
Adkins' signing puts the Falcons roster at 79, one below the 80-man limit.
