Mike Smith: Ryan will miss this week's game

Even though backup QB Chris Redman threw for 243 yards and two touchdowns while leading the Falcons to a 20-17 win over Tampa Bay, the hope was that second-year QB Matt Ryan would be back under center this week against Philadelphia. That hope was dashed today with the news that he will miss this week's game due to the injury...

Head coach Mike Smith noted on Monday that Ryan will miss this week's game against the Philadelphia Eagles with a turf-toe injury, but remains hopeful his talented young signal-caller will be healthy enough to play the last four weeks of the season.

"During the week he's going to work with our medical staff diligently to get back as quick as he can," Smith told the media today.

As a rookie last year, Ryan earned Offensive Rookie-of-the-Year honors by throwing for 3,440 yards, 16 touchdowns and 11 interceptions and leading the Falcons to an 11-5 record and a playoff game where they lost to Super Bowl runner-up Arizona on the road.

This season, Ryan was on pace to eclipse those numbers with 2,291 yards, 16 touchdowns and 12 interceptions in 11 games.

In his place, Redman was solid against the Buccaneers and he said Monday he was happy to get the chance to contribute.

"It was good to get back out there and get back into the game and get a feel for it," Redman told the media on Monday. "That's just part of being a backup, when you don't have that many practice snaps you just have to take mental reps. That's definitely different than getting out there and doing it yourself, and I could tell during the game just timing was a little off between me and Roddy and a couple of the guys. But everybody hung tough with me and we pulled through."

In other Falcons injury news, RB Michael Turner will be evaluated this week as he recovers from the troublesome ankle injury he re-aggravated against Tampa Bay after rushing for just 33 yards on 12 carries. In his place, backup RB Jerious Norwood, playing for the first time in five weeks himself, had 22 yards on six carries in Sunday's win.
