Blackmon goes to IR

The Giants injury parade continues with kick returner Will Blackmon going on IR, just in time for Sunday's must-win against Washington.

Kick returner Will Blackmon's knee injury landed him on injured reserve Wednesday, making him the Giants' 11th player to end his season prematurely.

To take his spot on the roster, CB Brian Witherspoon was signed. Witherspoon, 5-10, 180 pounds, has played in 22 career games with Jacksonville and Detroit. Although the Giants still have Darius Reynaud and Danny Ware available to return kicks, Witherspoon has extensive experience in that area, too. He returned 80 kickoffs for a 23.6-yard average, and 26 punts for a 10.8-yard average.

That's better than the Giants' total averages of the year; a mere 19 yards on 55 kickoffs and 5.8 yards on 41 punt returns.

Witherspoon had been out of football since the Panthers cut him Sept. 4. Carolina picked him up after the Lions waived him April 15.

"We worked him out a couple – three weeks ago," coach Tom Coughlin said of Witherspoon. "He worked out very well. He is very quick and fast. He will be a nice addition."
