Giants Could Look for Center

Shaun O'Hara's advancing age and injury problems of 2010 could cause the Giants to draft his potential successor at the end of the month.

When Tom Coughlin addressed reporters at last month's scouting combine, he mentioned that the Giants could be in the market for a center.

No surprise there. About to turn 34 in June, and coming off a season ruined by ankle and foot injuries, Shaun O'Hara must come into next season -- if there is one, that is -- as a question mark. And it would probably behoove the Giants to draft his successor now, unless the Giants are satisfied with current backup Adam Koets.

Koets initially stepped in for O'Hara earlier in the season before a torn ACL suffered in early November sidelined him for the remainder of the season. The former sixth-round pick from 2007 who prior to the 2010 season was seldom used, is expected to be ready for the scheduled start of the 2011 season. However, the most likely scenario is that the 27-year-old Koets, who signed a two-year contract extension last season, might be a stopgap pending the acquisition of a new full-time option.

Undrafted free agent Jim Cordle of Ohio State could also be a candidate. But chances are, the Giants are going to go after a center, perhaps as high as the first or second round.

That could be Florida's Mike Pouncey, 6-4, 310 pounds. Pouncey, who struggled to replace his brother Maurkice at center after he was drafted by Pittsburgh last year, is projecting to guard at the pro level, though that wouldn't necessarily discourage the Giants from looking at him given the success offensive line coach Pat Flaherty has had with converting O'Hara, Seubert, and Koets into serviceable centers.

Here's a list of some overall prospects the Giants are looking at.
