An inside look at the Giants preseason slate

For the first time since 2004, the New York Giants will play against the Buffalo Bills in the annual Hall of Fame game. Big Blue will also take on the Jets and the Colts on the road, the Patriots and the Steelers at home.

The NFL announced its 2014 preseason schedule on Wednesday afternoon, with the Giants scheduled to kickoff the whole shebang on Sunday, August 3 against the Buffalo Bills in the annual Hall of Fame Game. As is tradition, the contest will take place in Canton, Ohio and will serve as an "extra" preseason game for both New York and Buffalo. Both the Giants and Bills will play five warm-up contests before the regular season opens in September, which will – among other things– make it tougher for the squads to avoid injuries.

This year will be the Giants' fifth trip to the Hall of Fame game since they started playing it in 1962. New York tied the St. Louis Cardinals in the inaugural contest 21-21. The last time the Giants played in the game was in 2002, when they beat the Texans 34-17 in the Houston franchise's first ever preseason game.

The other four games on the preseason slate for the Giants are a home game versus the Steelers, a road game at Indianapolis, a "road" game against the Jets, and a home game versus the Patriots, in that order. Exact dates haven't been released yet, but the last four games will take place between August 7 and August 28.

The Bills are the only team on the Giants' 2014 preseason slate that wasn't on it in 2013. Last year, though, New York hosted Indianapolis and the Jets while hitting the road for Pittsburgh and New England.

The preseason game against the Jets that will take place between August 21 and August 24 has become a later summer tradition for both teams. Since 1969, the Giants and Jets have faced off in the preseason every year, with the Jets leading the series 24-20-1. They added to their victory total with a 24-21 victory over the Giants in 2013. This year will mark the 46th preseason meeting between the two sides.

The Giants have also seen a lot of the Patriots lately. The teams are playing in the preseason for the tenth straight season and the 25th time overall. New York leads the all-time preseason series 14-9, but lost the 2013 game in Foxboro 28-20.

The only 2014 preseason opponent that appears on the Giants' regular season schedule is Indianapolis. The game in August will mark New York's first game at Lucas Oil Stadium since it defeated the Patriots in Super Bowl XLVI back in February 2012. The Giants and Colts haven't met in the preseason since 1984.
