Elder statesman Jenkins teaches young Giants

Going into Week two of training camp, defensive tackle Cullen Jenkins has a good idea of who the top defensive players will be this season. He also talks about how their chemistry has been affected after the loss of some key players and new additions.

The young defensive tackle, Jonathan Hankins already looks promising during camp according to Jenkins. Hankins, who weighs 320 pounds, may be big in size but is still able to be quick on the field.

“He’s real strong and you look at him and you can tell that he’s a heck of an athlete and real quick,” said Jenkins of the former Ohio State star. “He’s got speed and quickness. I think that he can have a breakout year this year.”

The Giants certainly have enough men signed to the position, it now becomes a matter of who will be the standout of the younger guys and deliver results.

Jenkins, who started his NFL career in 2003, has taken the younger players under his wing and given them some personal experience to learn from.

“You have to talk to them and teach them things like ‘be ready for different types of offenses’ because you get used to going against our guys and what they do, Jenkins stated. “So you just try to pass down a lot of knowledge and prepare for what’s going on”.

Another standout according to Jenkins is defensive end, Damontre Moore. In his first year playing in the NFL with the Giants last season, he played in 15 games and was able to record 11 tackles.

Coming off of last year, Jenkins says he sees major improvement in Moore.

“It’s been amazing how he’s setting the edge and run the game,” said Jenkins of the second year defensive lineman. “How he’s transitioning to the pass, working on some of the techniques that he didn’t have last year. He’s really working hard and he’s really improving. You look at him now and he’s a completely different player than you saw last year”.

Chemistry between all of these guys is definitely something that gives the defense an edge. Even with key players like Justin Tuck and Linval Joseph gone and new players added, Jenkins still believes they haven’t lost the chemistry that they had last year.

. “The majority of the guys were here last year so there is some chemistry between us,” said Jenkins of the defensive line. “It’s now about adapting with the newer guys…But that’s normal; you’re always going to have a couple of new faces in a group. But I think the chemistry between us is great”.
