The first game of the regular season has finally arrive for the New York Giants. On Monday night, the Giants took on the Detroit Lions at Ford Field to open the regular season, after going an impressive 5-0 in the preseason. Since it’s the first game of the regular season, it tradition for players to vote for team captains for the season. The Giants announced the players who were voted to be team captains for the 2014 season.

The players that were voted to be team captains for the Giants this season were, Eli Manning, Victor Cruz, Jon Beason, Zak DeOssie, and Antrel Rolle.

Manning for the eighth straight year, was voted by his peers to be a captain. Usually the starting quarterback on the team is captain, but Manning definitely deserves being a captain for the Giants. He is a two time Super Bowl champion and two time Super Bowl MVP. He is also without a doubt the leader of the offense and the fact that Giants are his “team”.

For the fourth straight season, long snapper Zak DeOssie was voted to be captain. DeOssie will serve as the special teams captain. A two time Super Bowl champion, DeOssie is a 8 year veteran, with all 8 seasons being with the Giants.

Safety Antrel Rolle for the second straight year was voted a team captain for the Giants. Rolle has been one of the most important players in the Giants defense, ever since he came over in free agency from the Arizona Cardinals before the 2010 season. Rolle currently is the defensive player with most starts for the Giants, who are on defense this season.

The Giants also had two players voted to be a captain for them this season. Wide receiver Victor Cruz and middle Linebacker Jon Beason, were both voted to be captains for the 1st time this season.

Cruz has been the Giants best wide receiver since 2011 season. He has also been a great representative for the Giants off the field and has without a doubt become a hometown favorite for the G-Men. This season, Cruz will also take the reins as being the leader of the Giants wide receiving corp as well.

Beason will be entering his second season with the Giants this year. After coming over from the Carolina Panthers in a trade last season, Beason helped rejuvenate the Giants defense and help give the G-Men stability at the middle linebacker position. The Giants went 7-4 with Beason in the lineup for them and because of that signed him to a multi year contract in the offseason. Beason will be making his first appearance in 2014 for the Giants on Monday night, after being sidelined all of training camp with a leg injury he sustained in mini-camp.

Those were the rundowns on the Giants five team captains for the 2014 season. The Giants will hopefully continue their winning ways from the preseason, and start of the 2014 season with a win against the Lions on Monday night. Last season the Giants went 0-6 before they picked up their first win of the season.
