Coughlin impressed by Giants' duo of rookies

While Eli Manning and Victor Cruz are the usual suspects contributing to a Giants win, it was a pair of rookies who helped the Giants overcome a 10-point second half deficit and earned the respect of head coach Tom Coughlin.

The streak is now at three. That’s right, the New York Giants were able to defeat the Atlanta Falcons 30-20 on Sunday afternoon at MetLife stadium and win their third consecutive game. The Giants in order to get their third straight and third win of the season, needed to overcome a 10 point deficit in 2nd half.

“Two different halves, as far as I was concerned”, said Giants head coach Tom Coughlin on the Giants win. “The first half, I did not like at all and we did not think we played well. We didn’t think we made anything happen. We made some blunders.”

Despite the lackluster start Coughlin secured his 161 career regular wins as a head coach in the NFL.

After a rough first half, the Giants got it together in the second half and powered their way to a huge early season come from behind victory. On the big the comeback win, coach Coughlin said “We played hard. We made some things happen. We battled back and we won the fourth quarter and looked like the Giants in the second half and all three areas contributed very well. We had very few three and outs in that first half and we did have to get a few, especially later there in the game in the fourth quarter and late in the third. We started to get three and out, three and out. We had some decent drives. Of course, we got field position at the end when we needed the field goal to put the game to 10 points.”

In their big come from behind victory on Sunday, the Giants got great contribution their win from two rookie offensive player, one of which was wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. Beckham made his long awaited NFL debut on Sunday for the Giants and didn’t disappoint. The rookie hauled four catches for 44 yards and catching a touchdown pass in fourth quarter to give the Giants the lead at 27-20.

Coughlin on Beckham’s debut and what he thought about the rookie said “I was impressed. He is certainly going to add a lot to our weapons and our opportunities. He made a nice move and ran right by him; if we only got the ball inbounds, that would have been something. For the first time back and for not having the preseason and all of those types of things. The athleticism was obvious to everybody and his speed will have to be reckoned with.”

Besides Beckham, fellow rookie Andre Williams made a big impact on the Giants win at the running back position. After starting running back Rashad Jennings left early on in the third quarter with a knee injury, Williams stepped up to the plate in a big way for the Giants, running over a linebacker to score a touchdown to get Big Blue back in the game. Overall Williams had 20 carries for 65 yards and had two nice catches out of the backfield as well for a total of 18 yards.

On Williams performance and what type of player he can be for the Giants, Coughlin said “He is a tough, hard-nosed runner. That is why he is here. That was his reputation and that is what his evaluation was. He did what he did the week before. He dropped his shoulder and ran through someone to get in the end zone. He is a hard-running ball-carrier who can get himself low to the ground and has outstanding leg strength. He seemed to do okay in pass protection.”

With the win, the Giants are now 3-2 on the season and have two huge NFC East divisional games in the upcoming weeks against the Philadelphia Eagles and the Dallas Cowboys. Both games are on the road.
