The Giants waived 13 players and placed running back Joe Montgomery on season-ending injured reserve. Montgomery, the third-year running back, ruptured his left Achilles' tendon on June 11.

Among the released players was offensive lineman Jim Goff, who was on the Giants practice squad from Nov. 6, 2000 to the end of the season. The other 12 players who were released were rookie free agents. They are Adriano Belli, a defensive tackle from the University of Houston; Quincy Coleman, a cornerback from Jackson State; Kelly Herndon, a cornerback from Toledo; Jody Littleton, a linebacker from Baylor; Leon Murray, a quarterback from Tennessee State; Jerry Phillips, a linebacker from Tulane; Cedric Pittman, a defensive end from Nevada-Reno; Ray Redziniak, a guard from Illinois; Josh Stamer, a linebacker from South Dakota; Anthony Tucker, a wide receiver from Fresno State; Josh Warner, a guard from SUNY-Brockport; and Emile White, a defensive back from Houston.

Today's moves leave the Giants with a total of 69 players on the roster, including three NFL Europe roster exemptions. The Giants must remove one more player from the roster by 4 p.m. Tuesday to reach the NFL limit.

Also, the Giants were pleased to learn that Jason Sehorn's minor knee surgery was deemed a success. Sehorn's knee was flushed to reduce swelling that had bothered him late in training camp. The Giants are hopeful Sehorn will be available for the regular season opener at Denver on Sept. 10.

"The surgery went exactly as we had hoped it would," team physician Dr. Russell Warren said.

"We're still on track with Jason," Head Coach Jim Fassel said. "We expect him to begin running early next week and we're hopeful that he will have enough practice time to play in the opening game at Denver."
