Behind Enemy Lines: Titans

The Giants Beat lead writer David Aitken asks Titans publisher Greg Arias three burning questions ahead of the Week 14 contest between the Giants and Titans.

1) The Giants defense has uncharacteristically struggled to stop the run. What has been the biggest cause of their struggles?

So far the coaches and staff seem pleased with where Zach is at this point in his development. He definitely has the arm and can make all the throws. He is also displaying leadership and toughness. He still has a long way to go as far as truly learning how to play quarterback at this level, but he is embracing it and has begun to be the guy who is in early and staying late. As to the draft, I don't think that there is a quarterback in this draft (including Mariota) that fits Ken Whisenhunt's preferences for the position. They may take a QB in the later rounds as a developmental guy, but not in the first. Where they will go in the first round is a big question.

Certainly they need defensive help and in particular a pass rusher, but who they take will depend on who is available and where they rank them. GM Ruston Webster is a guy who is not afraid to take the best player available, regardless of need and there are some people here who believe that if Leonard Williams or Randy Gregory are gone when they Titans pick, that Amari Cooper could be their guy since the offense could also use help. The one position I doubt the take in the first is O-line considering they went there the last two drafts and this fan base needs a splash type player to get them excited again.

2)Orleans Darkwa is a guy that Titans fans are familiar with since he is from the area and lead Ensworth High School to state championships, how is he progressing and do you see a future for him with the Giants?

There is certainly the possibility of the Titans putting together a streak and winning those games, but the reality is that this is just not a good football team. They have not shown since Kansas City that they can play a complete game in all phases and with the decimation of the offensive line it will be tough. Also now that Justin Hunter is out for the season, and Kendall Wright is dealing with a broken hand and possibly out for Sunday, who will step up for Mettenberger, because this team can not run the football enoug, or at least haven't to this point to be able to win a game.

3) Eli Manning has a large cap number of around $16 million for next season. Some national talking heads are speculating that the Giants might clean house after the season. Because his wife is from Nashville, some people here are talking about the possibility that the Titans might make him an offer if the Giants release him if Tom Coughlin is fired and the team looks to start over. Do you see any possibility that this might happen?

The returns have not been good overall. Taylor Lewan looks the part and I think is the left tackle for the future, but he is a rookie and learning on the job, Chance Warmack has been up and down, and honestly this season has disappointed at times. He has not taken a step forward in year two as expected. Levitre has been the biggest disappointment this season. He is beaten regularly and has looked bad doing it. Oher has been adequate, but not outstanding. He is exactly what most people thought he was when he was signed. Center Brian Schwenke was playing somewhat better before his injury in Philadelphia ended his season, but there are some who think the Titans need to find an upgrade at that position too.
