Giants roll the dice with third round pick

The New York Giants took a gamble on defensive lineman Owamagbe Odighizuwa and VP of Pro Personnel thinks that the third round draft pick could provide a major boost to Big Blue's tepid pass-rush.

In the third round of the 2015 NFL Draft, the New York Giants selected Owamagbe Odighizuwa with the No. 74 overall pick. The VP of Pro Personnel for the Giants, Marc Ross gave his insight on why the Giants went with the former Miami Hurricane.

“At this point, he is a big guy that plays hard,” stated Ross. “He plays physical. He is strong. Snap to whistle, he is going after it. He is a team captain. He loves ball. He loves playing. That is what we are looking for.”

Ross and his team were intrigued with Odgizhizuwa’s hustle and leadership ability, as well as his admiration for the game. The VP later stated that the defensive end had sufficient experience playing both inside and outside on the defensive line, appealing to the Giants with his versatility.

“Outside, he is a power guy – let me try to run you over,” noted Ross. “He has some sneaky quickness inside, so they do both with him. That was definitely attractive to us and our defensive coaches.”

Odighizuwa gives the Giants a versatile player who can grow his skillset in two different defensive domains. He will be doing such under newly resigned defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo. This was Spagnuolo’s first draft back with the Giants, and Marc Ross talked about rejoining Spagnuolo throughout the drafting process.

“Once we started meetings, we just jumped back in,” said Ross. “The familiarity with him was great, but there was nothing that changed or he said, ‘Hey, I need this since I have been gone’ or ‘we need this, we need that.”

Ross also added the chemistry and organization that the coaching staff, Jerry Reese, and himself all share allow them to make the most out of their draft choices.

“We are prepared. We feel like we come to good decisions as a unit and as a team.”

While some thought Odighizuwa could have been as high as a second round pick, others thought the Giants may have reached with the selection. Ross gave his draft team’s perspective as to why they took him in the 3rd round.

“You are going down all these things and saying, ‘Alright, in the third round, these are a lot of attractive attributes that he has.”

Odighizuwa has impressed Giants personnel enough to be drafted, however a third round pick comes with some expectations. Ross also commented on where he believes future rookie can contribute.

“He has the special teams’ temperament right away,” admitted Ross. “Hopefully he will get on the field and contribute in some sort of packages versus the run and pass.”

The Giants drafted Odighizuwa because of his versatility, work ethic and athletic build. The organization feels unified in their decision and hopefully Odighizuwa can exhibit success in the NFL.
