The Giants released their 53-man regular-season roster on Saturday; following through on John Mara’s promise of wholesale changes. The overhaul includes 16 new members while 13 players were waived and the contracts of 6 veterans terminated. The subtractions (and additions) were, as usual, surprising with Coach Coughlin remarking that the process is never easy and always an emotional toil.
“They’re all the same, because inevitably there are guys, I don’t give a damn who you are, you become attached to them…They’re part of your landscape. To have some of these guys that have been here, and been through some of the really good times, to have them go, it’s not easy. Because you have something you shared. You shared it, and it was great. And it’ll be there for a lifetime. Especially as gracious as some of these young men are and the things that they say. I mean they’re in here almost in tears, and you’re sitting there thinking that this is just going to be one of those hard days. All of a sudden, they start touching the emotional part of it, and it’s not easy.”
Notable departures include LB Jameel McClain, who led the team in tackles last season, and WR James Jones, who joined the squad at the start of camp and had a team-high 15 receptions in 4 preseason games. FB Henry Hynoski, CB Chykie Brown, S Jeromy Miles, and LB Ashlee Palmer are some of the other athletes leaving.
Among those waived are TE Adrien Robinson, offensive linemen Adam Gettis, Emmett Cleary, and Sean Donnelly, WR Julian Talley, RB Kenneth Harper, QB Ricky Stanzi, defensive linemen Dominique Hamilton and Brad Bars, LB Cole Farrand, defensive backs Chandler Fenner and C.J. Conway, and K Chris Boswell.
WR Corey Washington was waived/injured (shoulder) while S Nat Berhe (calf) and offensive lineman Brett Jones (knee) were placed on injured reserve.
All six of the Giants’ 2015 draft choices remain with the team. Ereck Flowers, Landon Collins, Owa Odighizuwa, Geremy Davis, and Bobby Hart while Mykkele Thompson (Achilles) is placed on injured reserve.
TE Jerome Cunningham, LB Unai ‘Unga, and multi-talent Nikita Whitlock overcame the odds and made the team. Said Coughlin, ““They flashed and they followed through. It’s not all the finished product by any means, but they are young and they do play hard.
