Manning, Brees combine for most ever pass TDs

Eli Manning and Drew Brees set the world on fire Sunday by rewriting the record books with 13 combined touchdown passes in New Orleans.

The Giants matchup last Sunday with the New Orleans Saints was one of the prolific mutual offensive performances in the history of the NFL. The two offenses notched 101 combined points, tying the third most points scored in NFL game all-time.

Among other NFL records that came into contention to being broken on Sunday, both Brees and Manning combined to toss 13 touchdown passes. The cumulative 13 touchdown passes were the most tossed during a single NFL game; the previous record of 12 dated back to November 2nd 1969 where New Orleans Billy Kilmer and Cardninals’ Charley Johnson each tossed six.

Brees’ seven touchdowns also tied a long-standing NFL record and joins active members Peyton Manning and Nick Foles of the seven-touchdown-club. If the game had gone to overtime, Eli Manning could have joined that club as well. Brees also had the most passes (50) without being sacked since Joe Montana (52 passes) in 1986.

The Saints offensive excellence contributed to the Giants second worst defensive performance in terms of yardage allowed. The Giants defense was gassed for 614 total yards, their second most allowed during a Giants game, only falling short of the 682 yards gained by the Chicago Bears on the Giants in 1943. The 511 net passing yards allowed by the Giants defense were also a franchise worst.

Manning was able to set a career best with his 6 touchdown passes and joins elite company while doing so, however he did not set a franchise record as YA Tittle had games where he threw for 7 touchdowns and 6 touchdowns in the 1962 regular season.

Manning had a few additional personal accomplishments as well, breaking 3500 career pass completions (ending the game with 3506) as well as ending with a passer rating of 138.2, the fifth highest of his 12 year career.

Lastly, the 49 points scored by the New York Giants were the most ever scored by the organization with the final result of the game being a lost.

While a lot of blame is held by the defense, November 1st 2015 will forever be a historic game in NFL history, setting the record most passing touchdowns ever in a single as well as numerous individual accolades to both Manning and Brees.
