The elder Manning won his second Super Bowl ring on Sunday as the Denver Broncos stymied the Carolina Panthers 24-10. Peyton Manning threw for only 141 yards and committed two turnovers, yet did enough to win the game with help from one of the best defensive performances in the Super Bowl of all-time.
Peyton has now tied his brother Eli’s two super bowl wins. Although that specific comparison is equal on paper, comparing the two is not quite as even. Eli Manning might have the edge in post-season performance. Eli Manning is 8-3 in the playoffs, often as an underdog, throwing for 17 touchdowns and only 8 interceptions. Peyton Manning is 14-13 in the playoffs, losing six times at home in the respective season’s first playoff game. Eli has two super bowl MVP’s, while Peyton Manning has one (Von Miler won MVP on Sunday).
Eli’s advantage ends abruptly there. Eli Manning has proven to be a good NFL quarterback, who rises to the occasion, but Peyton Manning is one of the best to ever throw the pigskin. The 14 time pro-bowler and 7 time all-pro has won the MVP five times. Think about that before we anoint Cam Newton, Russell Wilson or Andrew Luck the next Tom Brady or Peyton Manning. He is the all-time leader in career touchdown passes and passing yards with over 530 touchdowns and 71,000 yards. Not to mention being a highly respected player who has always shown to be of high character and class, as well as being regarded as one of the most cerebral and detail-oriented player of all time.
Eli Manning is no slouch, but his four pro bowls, 44,000 yards and just under 300 touchdowns are not at Peyton’s level at this point in time.
The younger Manning still has more seasons to try to catch up to his brother, but it will be very hard to catch Peyton. Peyton Manning refused to say whether the Super Bowl was his final game as an NFL quarterback, but most indications seem to point to him retiring. At 39 years old, it seems fitting for him to go out with a Super Bowl victory, but only time will tell.
The duo are both very accomplished quarterbacks. Eli Manning has been a very successful quarterback who won two Super Bowls. However, in a comparison of the two Peyton Manning’s stellar career reigns supreme. There is no shame in that because not many can compare to the career of Peyton Manning. If this is the end of his career, he will go down as one of the all-time greats.
