The Giants announced the hiring of Martin Mayhew to Director of Football Operations and Special Projects. The position ecompasses several aspects including: player contracts, the team salary cap, and CBA compliance. Mayhew will also work with assistant General manager Kevin Abrams. Projects also designed by general manager Jerry Reese are also his responsibility. Before joining the Giants Mayhew worked for the Detroit Lions as their general manager.
It's quite ironic that the person who held Mayhews new position, Matt Harriss, went to Detroit Lions as their new vice president of football administration .
Mayhew's tenure in Detroit last 15 seasons until his firing this past November. He was also a former player of the NFL, playing for multiple teams throughout his career. In the 1988 NFL, draft, Mayhew was drafted as a tenth round selection for the Buffalo Bills. Mayhew played as a cornerback for the Bills, the Washington Redskins, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers during his nine year stint in the league. Mayhew did end up getting a Super Bowl ring with the Redskins in 1992.
Mayhew started with the Lions as a director of football administration and staff counseling. In the upcoming years he would get promotions and move up in the rankings. In 2003 he would move up to senior vice president of football administration and in 2004, would move up again to be assistant general manager. In late 2015, he would end up getting fired by the Lions because of their 1-7 record. The team would make the playoffs just twice during his run as General Manager. Before joining the Detroit Lions and after retiring from the NFL, Mayhew applied and went to Georgetown University Law Center. Mayhew ended up graduating in 2000 with a law degree as a Juris Doctor. He also was a former graduate of Florida State. He also holds special events including one named the Martin Mayhew Youth Football Coaching for 100 different coaches which helps teach young atheletes how to play football.
