Giants 2016 Schedule Preview: Steelers

The Giants Beat previews Big Blue's Week 13 opponent, the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Key free agent signings: DE Ricardo Mathews (San Diego), OT Ryan Harris (Denver), and TE Ladarius Green (San Diego)

Key free agent departures: OT Kelvin Beachum (Jacksonville), LB Sean Spence (Tennessee), DL Will Johnson (New York Giants), NT Steve McLendon (New York Jets), and CB Brandon Boykin (Chicago)

Trades: None

Top 3 Impact Rookies: CB Artie Burns (Miami), S Sean Davis (Maryland), and DT Javon Hargrave (South Carolina State).  Both Burns and Davis are key picks to improve a secondary that ranked 30th in total pass defense in 2015.  Burns proved he is a playmaker in 2015 with six interceptions and Davis has the size, strength and tackling prowess to cover massive tight ends down the seam.  Javon Hargrave (295 pounds, 37.5 career sacks) will be a solid pass-rushing replacement for the departured Steve McLendon.

Most intriguing storyline heading into training camp:  Will the secondary get better with the additions of Burns and Davis?  The Pittsburgh secondary was ranked 30th in pass defense last season and had a tendency to give up big plays.  If they can improve, they’ll complete what could be one of the premier defenses in the league.

Under-the-radar storyline heading into training camp:  What effect will the Le’Veon Bell suspension have on the team?  Although he’s only out for two games, he was suspended for part of the 2015 season due to violating the NFL’s drug policy.  He’s a phenomenal talent and greatly increases the Steelers’ chances of winning when he plays, but will he be able to stay clean and end his suspensions before he becomes another Josh Gordon?

Key Injuries heading into training camp: RB Le'Veon Bell (knee injury) and TE Ladarius Green (ankle injury—should be ready for camp)
