Giants Early-Mock Draft: First Round

The Giants Beat scout's who Big Blue should take with its top draft choice in 2017.

With the 2016 NFL season officially over, the primary focus for the 32 is the 2017 NFL Draft. The New York Giants may have some ideas for the free agency period like last year, but this year’s draft, if chosen well, could bolster their roster which already has championship potential.

The most crucial pick obviously comes in the first round and the Giants will look to make a smart selection at number 23. Here is one possible selection they can make at this stage in the draft:

The Pick: TE | O.J. Howard | University of Alabama

The Fit: The Giants have many areas to attend this offseason, but one of the main concerns is at the tight end position. Current tight end Will Tye may have the play-making ability in the open field, but he lacks run-blocking and route-running ability. Howard is an “exceptionally gifted athlete” according to NFL.com and it showed in his time with Alabama. He is fast for his 6-foot-6, 249-pound frame and super soft hands to go with it. Like Tye though, Howard can certainly improve on his blocking. However, his play-making abilities and raw talent at the position can be polished, making him a future start within the NFL. The Giants have lacked a solidified tight end for years now, and Howard could very well be the guy to change the status quo.

The Grade: 7/10 OR B+
