Defensive end Olivier Vernon spoke to the media after OTAs, answering questions about the importance of minicamp and how the 2017 Giants are looking.

There are many new additions to Big Blue, both through free agency and the draft. Vernon spoke on the new guys and how they are getting along with the team and how they are doing so far this offseason:

“At the end of the day, we have to get in pads. That's when things really get rolling and you could really get a sense of the guys that you have around you and you start gelling together.”

So far, Vernon likes what he sees. “I see a lot of young talent out there right now getting after it. It's refreshing.”

The Giants had one of the best defenses last season, ranking in the top spots for each defensive stat, including allowing the fewest touchdowns in the entire NFL. What made this defense so successful was the chemistry of the guys on the field.

From the defensive line to the secondary, the was direct and clear communication and execution. Speaking on the defenses’ relationship, Vernon explained, “When you're trying to build something, you want to keep everybody together for the most part. We got a lot of guys right now that saw what we could do last year.”

Looking onto next season’s defense, Vernon said, “Right now, it's all new and fresh. Everything that we did last year, is on the back burner now. It's a whole new grind. Everybody has to prove themselves once again.”

Speaking on what the team could improve on this offseason, Vernon said leadership.

“On paper, it looks good. But as far as what I see, as far as the leadership, guys being more vocal. Which we had vocal guys last year, but just adding to it. We got a lot of potential, but once again, you still got to prove yourself when you get on the field. I feel like this team is ready to prove themselves."
