An 11-year veteran, Alexander played the previous three seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He has played in all 160 regular season games in his career, with 146 starts, including 110 in a row. Alexander also has started four postseason games.

Alexander has 863 career tackles (576 solo), 30 special teams tackles, 21 interceptions, 4.5 sacks, 11 forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries. Last season with the Steelers, Alexander finished with 83 tackles (61 solo), five special teams tackles, four interceptions, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.

He was released by the Steelers on March 22.

The Giants created room on their roster for Alexander by waiving safety Ryan Clark, who played in all 16 games last season and 22 in his two years with the Giants.
