Giants finally put on the pads

The moment everyone's been waiting for came Monday morning, when Tom Coughlin put Big Blue through its first practice with the pads on. The results were about what Coughlin expected, with it quite obvious that the intensity level was raised significantly.

"It wasn't real crisp," Coughlin said. "There was not a lot of real good contact. They're getting used to the pads. This morning we went back to some of those nervous mistakes."

Such as jumping offsides and illegal procedure infractions that drew grimaces from Coughlin, who has very little time for mental mistakes.

* Coughlin said he's liked what he's seen from Eli Manning. "He's been hanging in there pretty well," he said. "He had a couple balls dropped this morning."

Manning, who sang a terrible rendition of "You lost that lovin' feeling" at lunch, said he had put to good use a very important tip he learned from older brother Peyton – having his own pen when signing autographs so he doesn't have to keep switching pens.

* Coughlin's also been impressed with third QB Jesse Palmer. "He hangs in there," Coughlin said. "He's a tough, competitive guy. He knows what he's up against, but it doesn't change his resolve."

* LB Carlos Emmons and exciting rookie WR Jamaar Taylor are on the work-once-a-day schedule, and will practice in the afternoon.
