Coughlin withholds starters

Giants coach Tom Coughlin said he has chosen the starters at left guard, middle linebacker and free safety, but isn't ready to announce his decision.

"It is not necessary for me right now to do that," Coughlin said. "We do have some people that are working there, and we will take care of that in a timely fashion. But it doesn't have to be on Wednesday."

What TGI can tell you is that Kevin Lewis will start at MLB and that Brent Alexander has been running with the first-team defense.

* CB Will Allen has not yet been cleared to practice because of the knee injury he suffered on August 27 against the Jets. Coughlin said Allen must practice if he is going to play and would like to see him work tomorrow. Allen, meanwhile, seems confident he will be lining up against Philadelphia.

"I'm fine," Allen said. "I feel like I'm ready to go. They want to work me out some more. Maybe I'll be out there tomorrow. I wouldn't put myself out there if I wasn't ready."

Asked if he thought he would play, Allen said, "Yeah. In order for me to play, I have to get out there and practice. Not practicing and going out there and playing, that's not the way to go. I'll know within the next day whether I can go on Sunday or not."

If Allen can't play, Terry Cousin and Frank Walker are the candidates to start in his place.

* Jeremy Shockey suffered no setbacks after practicing on a limited basis on Tuesday and did more today.
