Rookie Carter to return kicks

When the Giants field their first kickoff from Philadelphia in Sunday's big showdown, it will be rookie Jonathan Carter back deep - not Ron Dixon. Dixon has struggled all season returning kicks and made two huge mistakes in last week's win over Seattle that led to his benching.

Jim Fassel apparently is still upset with Dixon, who will remain in the offense, but has been removed from kick return consideration. In steps Carter, New York's fifth-round pick from Troy State, who will be signed to the active roster before Sunday's crucial contest. He was waived at the end of training camp, but was re-signed to New York's practice squad. He's been running with the first team kickoff return unit all week and was told by Fassel on Friday that he'll be the primary returner come Sunday.

"I'm just glad for the chance," Carter said. "Hopefully I can make something out of it."
