Issue 6 – Defensive line. They should have enough firepower at defensive end, but it's tackle that is a concern. They are a rather nondescript group, but a couple of them have to emerge. Fred Robbins is most likely secure at one spot, but the other spot appears to be wide open. It would be nice if William Joseph would claim the job and play like a first-round pick, but that remains to be seen. Damane Duckett and Davern Williams were two decent free agent pickups last year. Kendrick Clancy has some ability. Kenderick Allen has been around for a while. Logic says a few of them should make it, but this may be the most intense and interesting camp battle.
Issue 7 – Linebacker. Middle linebacker Antonio Pierce was a great signing. He's a young and improving player and they stole him from a division rival. The only concern, and it is slight, is that he has only done it for one year. There are issues at outside linebacker. It would be great if the top two backups, Reggie Torbor and Nick Greisen, would push starters Carlos Emmons and Barrett Green. Emmons is beginning to show his age and Green was an underachiever. They need much better linebacker play this year.
Issue 8 – Defensive back. They should be fine at safety. Hopefully Gibril Wilson is not a flash in the pan and Shaun Williams can come back from his injury. Curry Burns showed some promise and Brent Alexander is good insurance. The corner play, particularly Will Allen, needs to improve. He's been far too erratic and all of the CBs don't generate enough turnovers. It would be great if Corey Webster were to progress rapidly.
Issue 9 – Placekicking. Jay Feely was acquired to replace Steve Christie and that should be an upgrade. The issue here is with reliability. Feely has been a dome kicker and kicking in Giants Stadium can be treacherous. Length of kickoffs will also bear watching.
Issue 10 – Special Teams. Last year Willie Ponder came on as an effective kickoff returner, but they were not good returning punts. Someone needs to step up there. Lamont Brightful is a decent punt returner. He has a chance to make the team and improve this area.
