BATTLE OF THE WEEK: David Diehl vs. Rich Seubert for starting LG -Diehl, in his two seasons out of Illinois (a fifth round draft pick by the Giants in 2003), has started every game-16 the first year at RT, 16 last year at RG....Now he is moving again, to LG, which is the spot Seubert had nailed down until Oct. 19, 2003, when he suffered a compound spiral fracture of his right tibia, fibula and ankle. He has engineered an amazing comeback and now the two are locked in a tight battle for the job.

OTHER BATTLE FRONTS: LT Luke Petitgout is experiencing unexpected competition, or at least pressure, from veteran Bob Whitfield, a former Pro Bowler now in his 14th season. Petitgout, the team's first round pick in 1999, has never been outstanding but serviceable, and now he seems to have run into a two-year stretch of false starts, holding and a serious bout of back spasms. Whitfield, signed as a FA from Jacksonville, a looming presence.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Rookie RB Brandon Jacobs, the 6-4, 260-pound fourth-round pick, has been tearing up the Giants' defense in practice and last Saturday did the same to the secondary of the New York Jets. He seems to have locked up the backup position behind Tiki Barber, and the Giants will soon be forced to find a way to get him into the game along with their diminutive superstar.

ROOKIE REPORT: CB Corey Webster (second pick) reported five days late to camp after finally settling his contract dispute. He is going to be the third CB (and he is in competition with Will Allen for the starting job at LCB) and may become the punt returner as well. ... DE Justin Tuck (fourth pick) has been moderately successful, but seems to be a season away from contributing. ... RB Brandon Jacobs (fourth pick) might be the steal of the draft for the Giants, a 6-4, 260-pounder with blazing (4.39) speed and a liking for running into would-be tacklers. ... DE Eric Moore (sixth pick) suffered a sprained knee (medial collateral ligament) and may miss the season if placed on Injured Reserve now, which is a possibility.

INJURY REPORT: Rookie Eric Moore might miss the season with a sprained knee (MCL). ... LCB Will Allen has a slightly pulled groin. ... WR Jamaar Taylor (hip flexor), S Curry Burns (concussion), TE Visanthe Shiancoe (knee), WR Willie Ponder (bruised chest), G-C Wayne Lucier (calf), LB Barrett Green (limited following off-season knee surgery), RB Derrick Ward (limited following off-season knee surgery), WLB Nick Greisen (hamstring), SLB T.J. Hollowell (ankle) and DB Antwain Spann (Achilles) were others who missed varying amounts of practice time.
