Coughlin sets record straight

Aug. 18: Tom Coughlin sat down with the Giants beat reporters and covered a wide range of subjects in between practices Thursday afternoon.

Here goes:

Coughlin said the backup QB situation is still "up in the air," and that it needs to play itself out. We can tell you that Tim Hasselbeck will go second and Jared Lorenzen will work with the third team against Carolina. If there are any snaps left, Jesse Palmer will take them…

As for starter Eli Manning, "he's progressed in everything we've asked him to do."…

The coach admitted being frustrated with the injury problems of receiver Jamaar Taylor, but said he's happy with Visanthe Shiancoe as the second tight end, provided "he's able to stay on the field."…

Coughlin said he's been pleased with the progress of DT William Joseph, who's been running with the first-team defense for a while now. "He's very conscious of his assignments and very good at executing his assignments. Hopefully it's all coming together for him."…

At the same time, displaced starter Fred Robbins needs to work on his run defense…

Coughlin admitted being impressed with rookies CB Corey Webster, DE Justin Tuck and DTs Adrian Awasom and Jonas Seawright

Rookie DE Eric Moore, who might be headed to IR with a knee injury, is getting "better every day, but just not strong enough yet."…

As for his different camp schedule, Coughlin said he doesn't want "anybody to get too comfortable."

Roster moves: The Giants made several roster moves. Linebacker Joseph Scott, who was placed on the active/left squad list a week ago, has returned to the team. The Giants were also awarded wide receiver Zuriel Smith off waivers from the Dallas Cowboys. Smith caught three passes for 24 yards in the Cowboys' preseason opener against Arizona.

To make room on the roster, the Giants waived two free agents, rookie wide receiver Brandon Smith and first-year kicker David Kimball.

Practice notes: Will Allen suffered an upper back injury late in the evening session but was expected to be fine…

Michael Jennings will be the first punt returner Saturday night.
