The Vikings visited with four draft-eligible players on Monday – University of Minnesota running back Laurence Maroney, Stanford tight end Jon Alston, Georgia cornerback DeMario Minter and Wisconsin tight end Owen Daniels.
At 6 feet, 217 pounds, Maroney is expected to become a first-round pick in next year's draft. He has garnered all-conference honors his last two seasons, rushing or 1,464 yards and 10 touchdowns as a sophomore and more than 1,300 yards and 12 touchdowns as a junior in 2005 while splitting time with other running backs both seasons.
Alston, at 6-foot-1, 223 pounds, played a variety of positions at Stanford, but probably projects to outside linebacker in the NFL.
Minter, a 5-foot-11, 190-pound player who might fit in at the NFL level as a cornerback or free safety, is considered a mid-round selection, according to scout.com's draft values. He is the 17th-ranked cornerback on scout.com's draft rankings.
Daniels, at 6-3, 250 pounds, could turn into more of a West Coast tight end in the Vikings' new system, but he is considered a developmental prospect, according to TFY Draft Preview, not a player expected to make an immediate impact. He is the 11th-ranked tight end in the draft, according to scout.com.
