Peter balked at signing an injury waiver the Giants presented him, so New York pulled the offer off the table. Peter bolted from the Giants Stadium offices with his agent, Ralph Cindrich, and eventually signed a one-year pact to play with the Bears.
The Giants were trying to protect themselves because Peter suffered a neck/shoulder injury late in the 2001 season.
The 6-3, 320-pounder left New York for Indianapolis during the 2001 Draft, leaving the Giants shocked, as they thought they had an agreement with Peter and were trying to come up with the salary cap room to retain him.
Head Coach Jim Fassel was disappointed the Giants couldn't beef up their D-line.
"I can't fault Christian," he said. "If he didn't like some of the things in the contract, I can't fault him for that. I would have liked to have him on the team. I've always liked Christian. He's a tough guy and he loves to play football."
