Ward Unlikely to Start Season

It seems like the Giants are going to have to start the season without valuable running back Derrick Ward, who's expected to be shelved at least a couple more weeks and could take another month before he returns to action.

It's a big loss for Big Blue, which was hopeful Ward would have been able to return to work before the season opener on Sept. 10. Ward is the club's third RB as well as the blocking back for Chad Morton on the first kickoff return unit.

Ward, who is still in a walking cast, broke a bone in his foot during a freak accident, he slipped walking from one meeting room to another early in camp.

"We need him back because we really have no established number three right now," Tiki Barber said.

Brandon Jacobs is set to serve as Barber's primary backup while a handful of hopefuls, James Sims, Little John Flowers and Mike Jemison, have yet to establish themselves as dependable alternatives to Ward.
