Wilkinson Gets the Nod

The Giants have selected who will replace injured WLB Carlos Emmons and the first opportunity goes to rookie Gerris Wilkinson, who was very impressive after Emmons was injured last Sunday in Seattle.

Before practice on Thursday, Wilkinson was told he was running with the first team, although obviously he wasn't told he was guaranteed the starting spot just yet. The move was a bit of a surprise since the coaching staff chose this year's third-round pick over more experienced, former starter, Brandon Short, who will dress for the first time when New York returns from its bye weekend to host Washington on Oct. 8. Short's a seven-year veteran that's coming off offseason knee surgery, quite possibly a factor in the coaches' decision to deactivate him the season's first three weeks and to go with Wilkinson at this point.

Emmons learned earlier in the week that he'd be sidelined three weeks with a slight tear in his pectoral muscle. In the interim, it's the rookie's big chance to shine.
