49ers 16, Giants 13

Terrell Owens made a 33-yard catch and run to set up Jose Cortez's 36-yard field goal with :06 to play, giving the San Francisco 49ers a 16-13 victory over the New York Giants. Game Stats included

In the final drive, blown coverage by the Giants defense on Owens' catch led to the game-winning score, which came right after Tiki Barber tied the game with a 1-yard TD run with 1:49 to go.

Owens ran by CB Jason Sehorn on the play and let him go, thinking he had help by the safety or outside linebacker (Dhani Jones). Owens reached the New York 37, and that was essentially the game.

On the positive side the Giants outgained the 49ers 361-279 yards, with Kerry Collins going 28-of-45 for 342 yards. The Giants running game provided the remaining paltry yards.

The Giants had a lot of penalties and must cut down mistakes if they expect to bounce back next week when they travel to St. Louis to play the Rams.

Collins threw three interceptions, but one was a tipped pass, so we'll let that one slide. But WR Amani Toomer, who had nine receptions for 134 yards, lost 44 yards on one third-quarter pass because of a holding penalty against left tackle Luke Petitgout.

In addition to the penalties, the Giants punting was aweful, with all three sailing out of bounds and averaging under 35 yards. We wouldn't be shocked to see the punter gone by next weeks' game.

And speaking of being "shocked", our first round draft pick (sans one false start call early in the game) is as good as advertised. TE Jeremy Shockey had 3 catches for 44 yards, but even better, he kept the SF defense on their toes. When Shockey lined up twice in the third receiver slot, the safeties cheated over towards that direction and the Giants capitalized with completions to the other side, in both cases, I believe it was WR Ike Hilliard in single coverage.
