As the media looked on during New York's third offseason organized team activity (OTA), neither number 17, who only weeks earlier had stressed how he wanted to be around to help Eli Manning become the best quarterback he can be, and number 80, who reportedly had text-messaged his intentions of being around, were anywhere to be found.
Yup, the more things change the more they stay the same. Plaxico Burress and Jeremy Shockey found other options to occupy their time while the majority of their teammates worked out on the Giants Stadium practice field.
"(I) accept it," Manning said when asked about the absence of his two top targets. "I have to do what I have to do.
"I have to be positive and make the best of every workout with whoever's out there and wants to come out to practice and work. So those are the guys I'll work with and try to get as good as we can get with them."
Another notable, but lower-profile offensive absentee was fullback Jim Finn.
Also missing was DE Michael Strahan, who hardly needs offseason work. Strahan was believed to be in California and is expected back to work in the near future.
Receiver Amani Toomer was limited and DEs Osi Umenyiora and Justin Tuck watched from the sideline.
Giants coach Tom Coughlin wasn't about to shed any light on his missing quartet.
"We'll talk about the guys that are here," he snapped.
He also wasn't about to shed any light on the left tackle position, refusing to give a timetable for a decision. For the record, both David Diehl, the expected starter unless New York brings in an outside player, and Guy Whimper took snaps at left tackle.
