Sure the Giants are excited about Koets' athleticism, but right now it's hard to envision him ever starting at left tackle for Big Blue, let alone as a green rookie. Koets during camps has displayed the quick feet that caught the Giants attention, and it appears that he's done pretty well at picking up his alignments and assignments. But at this point, it's safer to say that Koets' best chance to make a living on the professional level would be as a guard.
He's a ‘small' 6-5, 298 pounds, if that makes any sense, and just doesn't appear to have the frame and build to be a tackle. Obviously the jury is still out since his career has just begun and it's not as if he has to supplant Orlando Pace to win the starting LT job. But there's obviously a reason that Koets was there in the sixth round. Don't forget, the Giants tried to trade up in the second round to get Utah tackle Tony Ugoh. So they obviously know LT is a big need; but they can't possible know at this point if Koets has what it takes or not. That's why they call the draft, especially the later rounds, a crapshoot.
In the next week or so, TGI will take a close-up look at each of Big Blue's draft picks and tell you exactly what we've seen and what's going on with the newest Giants.
