Camp Battles: LT

In the next few days, TGI will take a closer look at some of the key camp positional battles that are expected to unfold in the next few weeks.

All eyes will be on left tackle as training camp opens. While David Diehl is expected to man the all-important job of protecting Eli Manning's blind side, second-year player Guy Whimper is hoping to have something to say about that.

Diehl is being moved over from left guard, where he started last season, to replace the jettisoned Luke Petitgout. Diehl has played well wherever he's been put since he joined the Giants – at right tackle, right guard and left guard. But he's yet to play more than a couple games at left tackle, where he wrapped up last season.

Whimper has no experience but the Giants like his potential and how much he's progressed this offseason. He's definitely the underdog in this battle but with Diehl unproven, Whimper might just find himself in a fight for the OL's prized position.

There also remains a chance that New York might make a trade during camp to add to the LT mix. Rookie Adam Koets, despite what Tom Coughlin says, will not be a factor at left tackle this season – if ever.
