Camp Battles: 3rd WR

With the expected return of the franchise's all-time leading receiver back into the starting lineup, there should be quite a battle for the third receiver slot.

Behind starters Plaxico Burress and Amani Toomer, returning from knee surgery, last year's second-round pick Sinorice Moss and this year's second-round pick Steve Smith will be fighting one another for offensive reps – both during training camp and the regular season.

The Giants were totally excited to draft Moss last season, but a recurring quad injury basically sabotaged his entire rookie season. He's as healthy as can be as camp opens and the Giants are looking at Moss as basically another high-draft pick rookie on the roster. His moves, speed and shiftiness after the catch are the reasons everyone can'[t wait to see a healthy Moss in action.

During the offseason Smith has proven to be everything the Giants said he'd be when thus drafted him in April. He runs great routes, shows better speed than advertised and basically catches everything in his sight. While Toomer isn't about to let him take his job just yet, the Giants clearly drafted Smith with him eventually replacing number 81 in the starting lineup in the next year or so.

With offenses spread out so much these days, being a club's third receiver is in effect a starting position. That's why there's so much on the line for Moss and Smith. Keep an eye on this battle for sure this summer.

In the next few days, TGI will take a closer look at some of the key camp positional battles that are expected to unfold in the next few weeks.
