The Safety Dance

Will Demps says the cream will ultimately rise to the top.

However, James Butler might have something to say about that. While Butler has been running with the first team defense basically all offseason, it was still a bit surprising to see number 37 out there with the 1s when training camp opened.

New defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo slid Gibril Wilson, who's coming off a questionable year himself, over to free safety, while Butler is now the starting strong safety – until told otherwise.

As for Demps, if he did have any good games last season, they came very late in the year. He was signed before the 2006 offseason to come in and be the secondary's major playmaker. It never happened. Demps struggled to pick up the defense and never really appeared totally comfortable until the latter stages of the year. Now, he faces a training camp challenge to unseat Butler and return to the starting lineup.

With the loss of Jason Bell for the entire season, the Giants have Demps, seventh-round pick Michael Johnson and Richard Yancy backing up Wilson while Michael Stone and Craig Dahl are running behind Butler.
