Wide receiver DJ Hall was by far the most impressive non-drafted player and DE Wallace Gilberry showed himself to be a solid contender as well. TGI has learned that those two players and former Michigan State safety Nehemiah Warrick are the big three among the undrafted free agents that the Giants brought in.
You have to wonder why Hall, 6-2, 195, with a great set of hands and wheels, wasn't drafted. According to reports out of Bama, he wasn't exactly always a team-first guy. It's kind of hard to believe such a stickler like Nick Saban would deal with that type of player, but it's unlikely the rumors were totally unfounded. Another problem with Hall was that supposedly he wanted the ball all the time. Big deal? Who wants a receiver that doesn't want the ball?
"That's just a typical receiver, they always want the ball," Hall said.
Hall admitted that he was a "little surprised" that he wasn't drafted but added, "there's not much I can do about it now."
Hall's confident that he'll be able to overcome the odds and stick on the final 53-man roster.
"I feel like if I go out and do what I'm supposed to every practice that I will make the team," he said.
Gilberry said both he and Hall were hurt by erroneous media reports.
"Both of us got the raw end of the deal," the 6-3, 267-pounder said. "Everybody has their ups and downs. His downs were almost magnified out of proportion."
Gilberry actually feels confident with how it all played out.
"Everything happens for a reason," he said. "What better place to land than with the New York Giants?"
His good fortune hit Gilberry almost immediately. One of the first people he saw upon departing the team bus at Giants Stadium was one of his heroes, Michael Strahan.
He's hoping he and his buddy Hall will be teammates with the future Hall-of-Famer before too long.
