No trophies to hold, Patriots to dismiss or championships to win; just a ho-hum affair that will leave coach Tom Coughlin with plenty of film-room corrections to make.
Lions kicker Eddie Johnson drilled a 41-yard field goal with 2:47 to play to provide the winning margin as the Giants' title defense officially began on the wrong foot.
Finally: It took the Giants close to 50 minutes, but they finally got in the end zone. David Carr threw a beautiful 13-yard strike to Craphonso Thorpe to cap a 66-yard drive and knot the game at 10.
Slow O: Eli Manning wasn't exactly pleased with his unit's effort.
"We got off to a slow start, which is not what we really wanted to do," he said. "Throwing the ball wasn't very solid at first. During the second drive, we got a couple first downs and moved the ball. We were able to change field position. We still have some work to do, and that's what the preseason is all about, getting the kinks out and finding out what we need to work on."
Bright spot: Manning was pleased to see a big play from Sinorice Moss, who caught a 46-yard pass from Anthony Wright.
"Sinorice made a big catch and that's what he needs to do," Manning said. "He got by the guy, the ball was thrown really well, he did a good job of getting up, making the tough catch, taking a hit, and that's good to see from him."
Bad break: Reserve TE Jerome Collins was flagged for an illegal block, negating Danny Ware's TD run. Fortunately for Collins, Big Blue ended up scoring a TD anyway.
Bum ankles: A pair of rookie DEs – Robert Henderson and Wallace Gilberry – suffered ankle injuries and were taken into the locker room for X-rays.
