The backup QB battle is shaping up to be a real good one. David Carr threw the ball very well, and if not for an intentional grounding penalty that wasn't his fault, he very well might have been able to rally the Giants to victory.
"He did show some good things," Tom Coughlin said.
Carr completed 10-of-13 passes for 104 yards and New York's only touchdown.
The TD – a 13-yard pass to Craphonso Thorpe – wasn't just any score to Carr.
"To me that felt awesome," he said. "That one mattered to me. I wanted to show the guys that they can count on me."
Anthony Wright fared pretty well himself, as he completed nine-of-13 tosses for 116 yards.
In addition to his QBs, Coughlin credited these other players for their strong play: S Kenny Phillips (game-high eight tackles), WRs Sinorice Moss (46-yard grab) and Brandon London (three catches for 46 yards), and LB Cha se Blackburn (seven stops).
The Giants were very sloppy throughout most of the game. All told they committed eight penalties for 56 yards.
"There's a lot of things to correct and a lot of things to work on and that's why you play these games," Coughlin said. "It's the first preseason game. We like to win them all. We didn't win."
All Coughlin could say about the severity of rookie LB Jonathan Goff's back injury was that it was the most serious of New York's ailments. We're likely to find out more on Friday.
