Holding pattern: While he was on the sideline watching practice, the news might not be so good on rookie linebacker Jonathan Goff, who fractured the transverse process in his back against Detroit.

"He's going to be out indefinitely," Tom Coughlin said, "but no decision has been made."

Presumably, the only decision the organization has to make on Goff at this point is whether or not to place him on the season-ending injured reserve list.

What's up with Plax? Coughlin was uncertain how soon Plaxico Burress would be able to return to practice, but seemed optimistic that his star receiver would be able to get back on the field before training camp breaks on Aug. 17.

"They think he is (making progress)," Coughlin said of New York's medical staff, "and he's excited about it."

Strong start: Coughlin was pleased that rookie safety Kenny Phillips, who has been tearing it up on the Albany practice field, also played very well against the Lions, making eight tackles.

"He's making good progress," Coughlin said.

Hit of the day: Ahmad Bradshaw barreled over an unsuspecting Rich Seubert, who was caught flat-footed with no one to block. The 198-pounder had no problem knocking the 310-pounder to the ground.
