Latest on Giant DC Search

A week after the Giants canned ineffective defensive coordinator Bill Sheridan, the post remains vacant. Here's what we know at this point about the search for Sheridan's successor…

We know that New York had Bills interim coach/defensive coordinator Perry Fewell in for an interview, but didn't immediately offer him the post. It's strongly believed that Fewell is headed to Chicago to join Lovie Smith's staff.

The Giants have also made overtures to Romeo Crennel about their interest in the former Giants assistant coach and noted defensive mind. He's reportedly returning from vacation today so we'll watch closely to see if that heats up at all.

We also know that former Dolphins LBs coach George Edwards is out of the mix since he opted to become the defensive coordinator at the University of Florida. There are other names to keep your eye on. Jets LBs coach Bob Sutton was named by one media source as the Giants' top choice; however, we've heard no such conformation of that seemingly off-the-wall statement, nor have any of our peers.

Pats DL coach Pepper Johnson seems to be a popular name among the fans – and this writer, as well – but as far as we know the Giants have yet to make official contact with their former star linebacker. However, now that the Pats were unceremoniously dumped from the playoffs, New York can make a run at Johnson, if they are so inclined.

Mostly because he previously worked with Tom Coughlin, former Bills coach and defensive mastermind Dick Jauron has to be considered another possibility to fill the Giants' DC vacancy.

We were told the Giants were going to take their time on this hire, and so far that has definitely been the truth.
