"See, told you we were going to get defense," Jaguars head coach Jack Del Rio said sarcastically after the team made their final pick. "We saw tremendous value and we were able to acquire a franchise quarterback and a starting interior offensive lineman early in the draft," Del Rio added.
For now, the Jacksonville Jaguars 2011 NFL Draft is finished. They picked Middle Tennessee State defensive back Rod Issac with their final pick of the draft in the 5th round. The Jaguars began the draft with 7 total draft picks and ended it with 5. The Jaguars gave up their 2nd round pick to move up to 10th overall and draft their quarterback of the future Blaine Gabbert.
In the third round, the Jaguars once again traded up to select offensive lineman from Lehigh, Will Rackley. Rackley will add much needed depth to the offensive line, likely at the interior. Rackley played nearly every position on the offensive line in college, but likely will be kicked inside to either guard or center.
The Jaguars had two picks in the fourth round and used those picks on Division III wide receiver from Mount Union, Cecil Shorts III. The team is higher on Shorts than I am, and believe he can potentially be their third receiver right out of the gate. Shorts does fit the mold of a slot wide receiver in 3-reciever sets, however. With the second pick in the fourth round, the Jaguars took Wyoming safety Chris Prosinski. The Jaguars scouted Prosinski's games this year and also had him in for a private visit. It's possible Prosinski could be in the mix for a starting position.
"He will compete with Don Carey and wheover else we might have," said Terry McDonough.
With the Jaguars final pick they selected Rod Issac, who they feel can compete right away for the nickelback position.
"He's going to contend for the nickelback spot. I'm in that group of people in the building who are excited about tape I saw," Jack Del Rio told reporters.
While drafting more offensive players than defensive players is sure to leave quite a few fans puzzled, given the state of the defense. Terry McDonough addressed that, "We'll be very active in pro free agency."
