Jaguars Begin Renovations With Posluszny

As first reported by Fox Sports Jay Glazer, the Jaguars came to an agreement on a six-year contract with former Buffalo Bills linebacker Paul Posluszny. Find out how he will fit in with the Jaguars and what work they still need to do.

Although the St. Louis Rams struck the first free agency blow with their signing of former Eagles safety Quentin Mikell, the Jaguars were quick to the punch with former first-round pick Paul Posluszny, who will play middle linebacker. The former Penn State standout spent his first four seasons with Buffalo, improving his numbers each season.

The $42 million question that Jaguars fans want to know- does Posluszny fix the team's defensive woes?

The easy answer is- not immediately. Posluszny is a certain upgrade at linebacker from Kirk Morrison and he's a step in the right direction toward getting the Jaguars defense back to some level of respectability. Whereas "Poz's" 151 tackles last season in 14 games is certainly impressive, his 0 forced fumbles and 0 interceptions is somewhat troubling for what is now one of the highest paid linebackers in the NFL.

This move certainly signals the non-retention of Kirk Morrison, who like Posluszny was a tackling machine (averaging better than 100 tackles per year) on a poor defense. Jaguars fans quickly learned a season ago that Morrison didn't play as well as the stat sheet showed and was far from the impact linebacker that the team has been looking for.

There are no bargains in the first 72 hours of free agency and the Jaguars certainly didn't receive a bargain on the first day. That said, Jacksonville is a better team with Posluszny than they were without but if their defense is going to improve to the level of mediocrity, they will still need to address the safety position and scheme up some sort of pass rush.
