Chastin West is a former undrafted rookie from Fresno State and stands 6-foot-1, 214 pounds. West is said to have run in the 4.5's in the 40-yard dash.
West spent the 2010 season on the Packers practice squad before nearly making the team after a solid preseason in which he caught eight passes for 153 yards including a 97-yard touchdown.
To find out more about the Jaguars newest wide receiver we asked Bill Huber, publisher of Packer Report.com who has covered West in each of his two training camps with the Green Bay Packers.
Here's what he had to say--
If the Packers hadn't had four established wide receivers in Greg Jennings, Donald Driver, James Jones and Jordy Nelson and used a second-round pick on Randall Cobb, West would have made the team. But the Packers' veteran quartet is as good as it gets in the NFL — Jennings, Driver and Jones had 50-plus catches and Jennings and Nelson tied for the NFL postseason lead in receptions.
West isn't a tall guy and he's not going to outrun too many people — though he did have a 97-yard catch-and-run in the preseason — but he's a physical receiver with good hands who can make things happen after the catch. His toughness can get him on the field on special teams, too, as a cover guy and one of the deep guys on kickoff return. I think West has a future in the league and I'd be surprised if he doesn't carve out a niche down there.
With as poorly as the Jaguars wide receiving corps has played, any possible answer is one worth exploring. Chastin West had a great preseason with a great team and it's possible that he could catch on in Jacksonville.
