NFL Midseason All-Underachiever Team- Offense
QB- Philip Rivers, San Diego- Rivers has somehow fallen off the cliff and there's no good reason for it. He has his best wide receiver Vincent Jackson back and Rivers is continuing to throw off his back foot into coverage and make mistakes. The San Diego signal caller leads the NFL with 14 interceptions.
RB- Chris Johnson, Tennessee- The poster child for why you shouldn't pay a running back has looked like he's aged 10 years this offseason. Johnson isn't as explosive, he doesn't break tackles and the Titans would likely have a more consistent rushing attack if the bulk of the carries went to Javon Ringer.
RB- Rashard Mendenhall, Pittsburgh- Mendenhall doesn't seem to have the explosiveness that he had a season ago and at times this year Mendenhall has run like a corpse (that was dumped in the water).
OT- Sam Baker, Atlanta- The former first-round pick has been beat consistently by nearly every defensive end that's lined up across from him. Baker went down with a back injury a few weeks ago and the Falcons are undefeated with Will Svitek in his place.
OT- Levi Brown, Arizona- Although few believe that Levi Brown is a future Hall of Famer, the former first-round pick has allowed 8.5 sacks this season totaling 77.5 yards lost. Add in three more penalties and Brown has been one of the worst offensive tackles in football.
OG- Robert Gallery, Seattle- The former first-round pick was a bust at left tackle, but found a home on the interior and played very well for the Raiders. After bolting in free agency for Seattle, Gallery has battled a knee injury and has allowed 3.25 sacks in his four games played along with three more penalties.
OG- Logan Mankins, New England- Fresh off his six-year contract extension, Logan Mankins has been one of the leakiest parts of the Patriots line. Mankins has allowed 3.5 sacks in his eight starts, as well as five penalties.
C- Jason Brown, St. Louis- The Rams pricey free agent acquisition from a couple years ago much like the team, hasn't been good in 2011. Brown has allowed 2.5 sacks in eight games and several pressures which has helped lead to Sam Bradford's erratic play.
TE- Marcedes Lewis, Jacksonville- Coming off a Pro Bowl season, Lewis held out much of the first week of training camp in search of a new contract. Lewis got paid and ever since his production has dropped considerably. After scoring 10 touchdowns a season ago, Lewis is yet to find the end zone in 2011 and has dropped numerous passes.
WR- Chad Ochocinco, New England- We knew going into this season that "the Ocho" was getting on in years and it would take a little bit of time to adjust to the Patriots system. Nobody, certainly including Bill Belichick who picked up a $4.5 million roster bonus, envisioned that Chad would have nine catches in eight games, and show no real ability to separate from defensive backs.
WR- DeSean Jackson, Philadelphia- After spending much of the offseason vocally campaigning for a new deal, DeSean Jackson has found the end zone just twice and has twice as many dropped passes. He appears to be more Devin Hester than Mike Wallace.
Stay tuned for the Midseason Defensive All-Underachiever team.
