In a season with almost wholesale changes across the board, the Jaguars will be maintaining some continuity on the strongest side of the ball. As first reported by SB Nation's Alfie Crow, the Jaguars have retained the services of defensive coordinator Mel Tucker.
In his first season actually calling plays for the Jaguars, Tucker took the unit that finished 2010 ranked 27th in defense to sixth in 2011. Although the team upgraded at linebacker with Paul Posluszny and at safety with Dawan Landry and Dwight Lowery, Tucker navigated the unit to a drastic improvement only bettered by Wade Phillips and the Texans.
Tucker interviewed with the Vikings on Thursday for their soon to be vacant defensive coordinator position but obviously felt that the players he knows and cares deeply about were a better fit.
According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Jaguars are expected to hire former Atlanta Falcons quarterbacks coach Bob Bratkowski to be their new offensive coordinator. Bratkowski was in Atlanta for just one season with new Jaguars head coach Mike Mularkey.
Bratkowski was the offensive coordinator for the University of Miami from 1989-1991 where he helped win two National Championships. Bratkowski then moved on to the Seattle Seahawks as a wide receivers coach (1992-1994), then was promoted to offensive coordinator (1995-1998). He went to Pittsburgh as a wide receivers coach in 1999 for two seasons before spending 10 years as the offensive coordinator of the Cincinnati Bengals where he was part of two AFC North division titles as he helped craft Carson Palmer into a Pro Bowl quarterback.
