Jaguars defensive tackle Terrance Knighton had surgery on Sunday as a result of an eye injury he sustained earlier that day.
"We are in the process of gathering information about what happened and are not able to further comment at this time," the Jaguars' statement read. "Our concern and our focus is on Terrance and his health and recovery."
Knighton sustained the injury in an incident early Sunday morning at a nightclub in Jacksonville, according to the Florida Times-Union. The severity of the injury is unclear, but Knighton was released from the hospital and had an appointment with a doctor Monday.
Knighton has started all but three games for the Jaguars since joining the team in 2009. He had 29 tackles in 13 starts last season.
Prior to the incident, Knighton had talked about his newfound focus on getting in shape.
The Jaguars "Pot Roast" may be coming to training camp without the accompanying potatoes. Terrance Knighton, who picked up the unique nickname due to his love for his mom's pot roast, has battled a weight issue for each of his three seasons with the Jaguars. A year ago, Knighton missed several days of fall drills to work on reducing a weight that reportedly ballooned past the 360-pound mark.
That's all in the past, the Jaguars starting defensive tackle said this week.
"I'm in the best shape I've been in since reporting as a rookie," he said. "The number is a lot lower than checking in last year when I came back during camp. I'm 20 pounds less (than what he was a year ago)."
Knighton has incentive. He's in the final year of his contract and Jaguars general manager Gene Smith has told him if he controls his weight, he would be rewarded in his next contract.
"That's important to me," he said. "If guys tell you the money wasn't important, they're lying to you. But really, I care about my health and longevity after football. I don't want to be remembered for the guy who had weight problems. I want to be remembered for the guy who turned it around."
