We had a chance to review the tape in the Jaguars 16-10 preseason opening victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Find out which players helped themselves and hurt themselves.
Jaguars Defensive Line- Although they didn’t put up a lot of stats, the Jaguars defensive line rotation absolutely dominated the Buccaneers offensive line. So much so, that one of the Bucs linemen has already been benched.
For the first time in a long time, the Jaguars were able to get sustained pressure from pretty much everywhere. Red Bryant was nearly unblockable, and Chris Clemons, Tyson Alualu and Chris Smith each registered sacks, with Alualu’s forcing a fumble. Sen’Derrick Marks led the defensive line in tackles and stuffed up the middle.
Rookie linebacker Telvin Smith flashed and drew a compliment from Jaguars head coach Gus Bradley as he said Smith, “makes the entire defense faster.” Smith had a hit on Bucs quarterback Mike Glennon and made a pair of tackles.
Laroy Reynolds continues to show that he belongs in the league as he fit in his role very well and made a couple tackles.
Ryan Davis and Chris Smith look like they can be very good fits at the Jaguars Leo position as they were able to rush the quarterback with good success.
Winston Guy clearly had the play of the game as he intercepted quarterback Josh McCown and rambled down the sideline 68 yards to paydirt. Guy also had a nice pass breakup.
Jeremy Harris played better than his stats showed and he has a solid opportunity to make the roster in what is looking like a pretty loaded defensive backfield.
Cornerback Jamell Fleming didn’t make the stat sheet, but he impressed head coach Gus Bradley. Fleming is another player to watch as the preseason progresses.
Overall, the Jaguars defense was dominant. They stopped the run and put pressure on the passer, which is what all great defenses do. This Thursday will be a great test as the team will face a much better offensive line with better weapons in Chicago.
