JagsInsider.com caught up with former Jaguars quarterback David Garrard at the Senior Bowl, where he was marketing his new business venture. We talked about some prospects, his playing days and the Jaguars current quarterback, Blake Bortles.
The one prospect that really caught Garrard’s eye was former Kansas State wide receiver Tyler Lockett.
“This young man makes plays,” Garrard said.
The former Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback was right as Lockett continued to play bigger than his 5-foot-9 ?, 181 pound frame would suggest. He was able to get open against each of the Senior Bowl defensive backs assigned to cover him, and showed a steady set of hands.
The Jaguars are pretty heavy at wide receiver thanks to last year’s draft and the slight possibility of a Justin Blackmon return, but every team should be able to find a place for a playmaker like Lockett.
“He’s a really good kid,” Garrard added. “I know his father and uncle and I’ve known him since he was about 7 (years old).”
Garrard said that he wasn’t having any more trouble with his back and he thinks highly of the Jaguars organization, right up until he was released just days before the season began.
“That was really unfortunate,” Garrard said. “Everything was really good and really classy up to that point.”
Speaking of classy, I asked Garrard about the current team and current quarterback Blake Bortles.
“He’s a good player,” the two-time Pro Bowler said of Bortles. “He has to protect himself behind that line, don’t take too many hits.”
When pointing out the Jaguars offensive line struggles, Garrard brought the conversation back to his playing days.
“It wasn’t really any different when I played,” Garrard said, throwing his line under the proverbial bus for what could be the final time. “It was hard to stay healthy but I did it.”
It was good catching up with David, who seems to be in good shape both physically and financially. It’s unfortunate that he still has to denounce his teammates.
