Mike's Jags Memory

The Jags wrapped up their second day of joint practice with the Bucs today, and both teams showed great promise for 2016. Both offenses started fast and played hard, while the defenses showed how versatile they could be in terms of coverage and pressure on the quarterback.

The Bucs star wide receiver Mike Evans had his own experience during the joint practice and could not believe how far both teams have come along. Evans noticed how young both teams are and the level of play these young players bring to the table. The Jags secondary stood out to Evans and he had nothing but great things to say about the young defensive backs.

“They got big thick DBs, they get your hands on you at the line, they can run, they are very talented on that back end and really gave us some work.” Said Evans about the Jags secondary. Evans also elaborated how it was a nice change of pace going up against a different group of cornerbacks and safeties.

The Bucs star shined today in camp. He and quarterback Jameis Winston hooked up for two big catches against the Jags defense. His size was on full display as he used his height and length to play jump ball with the secondary. Though Evans had a great camp, it wasn’t perfect. Jags safety Johnathan Cyprien held his own against him and was able to match his physicality.

It’s a tough match up for the Jags secondary. Vincent Jackson and Mike Evans are two of the biggest receivers in the NFL. One brings age and experience, the other brings athleticism and tenacity, and both bring size. The Jags showed today they can hang with the big body wide receivers, but there is still more work to be done.

Both teams benefited tremendously from the joint practice. It is a chance to test the playbook against an opponent, allow young players to adapt to adversity, and get reps at the highest level before the season starts. Both teams will be all systems go when they meet Saturday night at EverBank Field.
